Over the past few years, water management and distribution have taken a serious setback in all the cities of India. In a world where a nation’s prosperity is synonymous with the progress of its construction industry, it is vital to plan efficiently. Fantasticity puts forward an opportunity for the innovative minds to plan and create a township with unbinding imagination.

A city X is a heritage sight known for its historical stone carvings. Its scenic beauty attracts tourists from all over the world. The city is suffering from a lack of efficient network of water supply. Hence the governing body of the city has decided to construct a new water distribution system and waste disposal system to facilitate the corporates and tourists. Participants are required to provide a tender for the same.
  • Problems like water hammer and water quality should be addressed.
  • Drinking water needs to be distributed using a separate passage.
  • Network may consist of pipes or open channel, combination of different types of pump.
  • Discharge of the river is known to be 10000 cu.m/s.
  • Use of both river water and ground water is recommended.
  • Refer IS code for water consumption details of different units.
  • Large scale industries given are Automobile and Fertilizer industries,five in number,each producing 500 units per day. Small scale industries refer to Paper and Sugar Industries,ten in number,each producing 250 units per day
  • Any other data may be suitably assumed.
  • Basic plan of networks showing major specifications and planned technologies.     
  • Estimate for construction.
  • General description (technical) of the type of construction method to be followed.                                                                                                                                                                   
  • A map (AutoCAD) of layout is mandatory
  • No major demolitions on the current state of city are permitted
  • Selected teams will be required to present their idea and model in front of the jury
  • The one found economical and the most convenient would be given preference                                                           

The team can include a maximum of three members.

Stage I: Teams are expected to send the abstract design, concisely stating ideas and techniques, in MS-word document, AutoCAD drawings etc, through email. Teams will be shortlisted based on these documents. Last date for submission of design and tender is 15th October 2011.

Stage II: Selected teams will be invited to Engineer'11 and are required to give a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation must include layout plan and analysis using Epanet software( provided in Resources). Complete cost and energy consumption analysis of the campus must be presented.

  • Planning, operation and analysis of the distribution system - 60%     
  • Presentation - 20%     
  • Report - 20%                                                                                                                                                                                      
  • All members of the team should be enrolled as students in an educational institute.
  • No person can be a part of more than one team.
