Introduction

The world seems to be heading towards an imminent energy crisis. Yet, there are a few choices that one can make in the present, which can pave the way for a sustainable future. Nirvahana provides you the platform to innovate on energy efficient modern day infrastructure and designing self sustainable models. It concentrates on the issues of green design and sustainability.

Problem Statement

Participants are required to design a completely self-sustained campus for an upcoming university of international standards in the Sundarbans, India. The University is to be recognized as a modern, energy efficient and eco- friendly, green campus. Innovative ideas and world class design will be appreciated.

Team Size: The team can include a maximum of three members.

Event Format:

Stage I: Teams are expected to send the abstract design, concisely stating ideas and techniques, in MS-word document, AutoCAD drawings etc, through email. Teams will be shortlisted based on these documents.

Last date for submission of design and tender is 15th September 2010.

Stage II:  Selected teams will be invited to Engineer'10 and are required to give a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation must include layout plan and various energy-efficient techniques employed. Complete cost and energy consumption analysis of the campus must be presented.

Specification

  • The site is situated at Sundarbans. 1000 acres of land has been sanctioned for this project.
  • Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Sundarbans is intersected by a complex network of streams and salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and is known for the eponymous Royal Bengal Tiger and numerous species of fauna.
  • The region receives an average annual rainfall of 2000 mm, and is surrounded by agricultural lands.
  • The institute is to accommodate 6000 students, offering courses in the 7 major engineering disciplines.
  • The plan is to clearly depict the location of the various essential buildings (auditorium, library, departments, laboratories, hostel blocks etc.). Any other innovative ideas beyond these will be appreciated.
  • Adequate care has to taken to minimise the interference of the campus with the existing environment.
  • An illustration of the plan showing maximum details of the layout and functionality should be provided. This has to be done softwares like AUTOCAD, 3Dsmax etc.
  • The plan and sectional details of a model hostel block housing the necessary facilities to be made. 3D renderings can also be done.
  • All the buildings must satisfy bye-laws.
  • The participants are free to use any material and techniques for the development of the campus. The economy, feasibility and sustainability should be duly considered.
  • In the post construction stage the participants are required to estimate the daily consumption of energy.
  • The reduction in consumption of conventional energy as estimated by the participant may be arrived at by use of alternate sources of energy and tapping of natural resources.
  • Calculation of the energy required for sustenance and numerical analysis of the novel techniques adopted, along with justification is expected.

Note: The decision of judges and organizing committee would be final and binding. The organizers reserve the right to modify any of the rules and regulations from time to time in order to maintain a healthy spirit of the competition. Participating teams are requested to check his space for the latest updates.
